I attempted to completely remove both VMware View Agent and VMware Tools. Then perform a fresh install of both. Everything installs correctly except for View's USB Redirection. Here are the steps I took.

  1. Uninstalled VMware View Agent
  2. Rebooted
  3. Uninstalled VMware Tools
  4. Rebooted
  5. Deleted c:\ProgramData\VMware
  6. Deleted c:\Program Files\VMware
  7. Deleted c:\Windows\System32\drivers\vmw*.sys
  8. Deleted c:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\vmwvhub*.*
  9. Rebooted
  10. Installed VMware Tools complete install
  11. Rebooted
  12. Installed VMware View Agent complete install
  13. Error from VMware View Agent Installer Information. "Error 28030. The installer failed to install the USB driver. To ensure a successful installation, please restart your machine and relaunch this installer."
  14. Rebooted
  15. Installed VMware View Agent complete install
  16. Same Error 28030
  17. Rebooted
  18. Installed VMware View Agent complete install except for USB Redirection
  19. Successful installation
  20. Rebooted
  21. Installed VMware View Agent > Modify > added USB Redirection
  22. Same Error 28030

Guest OS power policy

I was trying to find some documentation on recommended guest OS power policy settings.   We already have our hosts set to high performance but for say a windows guest how does the OS policy affect it?  Should it also be set to high performance or does it even matter?  Is there a relationship between host and guest power policies?

A VM with that specs is IMHO a ticket to problems. I would not put any valuable data into a VM like that.
Way too much RAM and CPUs while using a growing vmdk on the other side.

If you really need the RAM and the CPUs you should also give the VM a preallocated vmdk.

A single small error with a growing disk can make the whole disk unreadable.
Preallocated disks on the other side are as stable and error-forgiving like a physical machine on regular harddisks.

I use growing vmdks with a nominal size larger than lets say 200Gb only for test VMs.
For VMs with valuable data only preallocated vmdks should be used

Re: VMDK Version upgrading from ESXi 4.1 to ESXi 5.1

Hi Oscar,

Thanks for the reply.  I did see that thread but it never specifically answered the users question.  He was asking if the VMDK Version 3 is not supported, not the VMFS datastores, correct?  Or did he kind of answer it in a roundabout way.  By that, I am interpreting it this way:

  1. I need to upgrade my vCenter to version 5.1 U1.
  2. I then need to upgrade the datastores from VMFS3 to VMFS5 using the "vSphere Client, Under Configuration> Storage, highlight the desired VMFS-3 datastore, and click on Upgrade to VMFS-5..."  The existing ESXi 4.1 hosts will be able to still use the VMFS5 formatted datastores.
  3. At that point, I can upgrade my ESXi hosts to ESXi 5.1 U1
  4. Then we are good!

Does that seem right?

Thanks again.

Awesome. Please note that the rest of the VM's files are in a different folder. I've attached a screenshot of that folder

Oops - oh dear - shame on me - that settings will not work of course - every parameter that is defined twice makes the vmx invalid.
Sorry - I correct the post now

Re: Replacing one virtual disk with another in a VM

Yes
you now have

scsi0:0.fileName = "VM-B-000001.vmdk"

scsi0:1.fileName = "F:\CASES\VM-A-000003.vmdk"

and if that fails because you need to boot from scsi0:1 then revert back the boot-oder to scsi0:0 and leave it like that.

Then just swap

scsi0:0.fileName = "VM-B-000001.vmdk"

scsi0:1.fileName = "F:\CASES\VM-A-000003.vmdk"

with

scsi0:1.fileName = "VM-B-000001.vmdk"

scsi0:0.fileName = "F:\CASES\VM-A-000003.vmdk"

vCenter metrics not available after installing view adapter

we are running 5.7.1 of the vApp and everything was working fine with vCenter, I added the view adapter (which we are licensed for) to the vApp and since then I can't select any metrics that have to do with the original adapter.  I have both vcenters added but I can't add any metrics to any custom dashboards..

The screenshot below gives an example of what I am seeing when I try to configure a custom dashboard.

Any help is much appreciated.

vMotion + Hardware Upgrade

I read that in the documentation it does recommend vMotioning the VM's off of the host prior to the upgrade. It does not specify however if you are able to vMotion back once the upgrade has completed. For instance, if we put a 4.1 host into maintenance mode and upgrade it to 5.0, are we able to them vMotion VM's from a 4.1 host to a 5.0 host?

Upon completion of the host upgrade, do we also need to upgrade the VM's? When we performed our upgrade from 3.5 to 4.1, one of the steps included upgrading the virtual hardware which required a reboot. Is this also necessary when moving from 4.1 to 5.0? And is a reboot required?

Inflating a thin provisioned virtual disk will only allocate all the provisioned disk space, but it will not change the initial virtual disk format. In order to change the virtual disk format you either have to migrate the VM to another datastore or clone it using vmkfstools.

Re: Update Manager Plug-In simple question

There is no harm downloading and installing, this is a client plugin and does not impact your hosts in any way. Once installed you get an additional "Update Manager" tab where you can  switch between compliance and admin view to manage your infrastructure. Patches are downloaded into a central repository and only deployed to your hosts when you remediate them - this is not an automatic process, so you need to initiate it.

Jon

Unfortunately, we are not able to resolve this during your lab session, but we will pass the information along to the team who built the lab so we can get it corrected. I apologize for the inconvenience and I will post here once this has been resolved.

> Do you know why the guest ejected the disc at 2013-09-25T12:48:24.894+02:00?

Ubuntu LiveCDs all do that - in WS 9 and earlier you would then just enter OK to eject the CD/ISO but in WS 10 that now often sticks across a reboot and in a VM with firmware = bios you would have to shutdown completely and reconnect the ISO in settings again.
Interesting with firmware = efi this seems to work as expected.

Adding NFS to data-va. zmvolume failed at ./mount-nfs-store.pl

I have WorkSpace 1.5

I am trying to add NFSv3 share to it. The NFS server is Windows 2008.

I used the instructions in the document. Whats happening is at the line "mount -a" in mount-nfs-store.pl script its changing the ownership and group from zimbra to 4294967294 and hence giving the

Error occurred: directory does not exist or is not writable

zmvolume failed at ./mount-nfs-store.pl line 67

As soon as I unmount the ownership and group go back to zimbra.

Not sure whats happening here any ideas?

Also I cant chown to zimbra after 4294967294  this unless and untill I unmount the drive first.

Thank you

Trouble shoot install STAF fallure

I need to do certification in Vsphere 5.5.  Using Installation Helper View attempt to install STAF on the target system and get failure.  How do I trouble shoot this failure to find the root cause?  The firewalls are disabled and each machine can ping the other.

STAF ping failed - Please check network connection and make sure firewalls are disabled.

Please confirm if your setup is a Windows 2012 R2, which is not supported.

Otherwise you may want to re-try using SQL 2012 standalone so we could narrow down the issue. Please upload the vminst.log.

Nice - boot from USB-disks now works without workarounds

Thanks for a new feature that was missing for a long time : USB-boot

So far I only tried a boot from a SSD-stick that is connected via USB and which appears as USB-disk inside the VM.

I would be nice if it also worked with VMs that do not use firmware = efi but this is already quite useful for folks that create USB-boot devices.
