Perhaps, this response is a little late, but better late....
Had this problem with VMware 8. I use a USB device (Fiio). In Virtual Machine Settings, deleted "Sound Card" and "USB Controller", then re-added them. Now, the Windows 7 appliance can find the appropriate sound card.
