First of all VMware Player is essentially a free and unsupported product so, no offense intended, take it or leave it!
Secondly you've been around here long enough to know you should check the VMware KB and or Google before posting. Not saying you didn't however I'm assuming since I can search both the VMware KB and or Google the error message you got in VMware tools for Windows 7 will not download (CDS internal client error (3033) there is a proposed solution and had you tried that and it didn't work I'm further assuming you'd mention that. Additionally I have posted direct download links numerous times for VMware Player's VMware Tools and can find them searching the forum and Google using something as simple as "vmware player vmware tools unavailable" (without the quotes).
Thirdly, VMware Player can be directly download from VMware's web site as well and one is not solely dependent on the apps internal upgrade mechanism for this.
As to the negative comments about VMware, like any company or its product and services, there is unfortunately probably aways some truth to the negative comments made by its users.
