I've noticed that every time I power on a VM, Workstation creates a .vmem file that's equal to the size of the guest's RAM is created. On an HDD this wouldn't be a big problem, but on an SSD where disk space is at a premium and every gigabyte used slows down performance, I simply can't afford to temporarily lose 2-4 gigabytes of disk space every time I power on a VM.
Googling indicates that the contents of the .vmem file are not necessary to the functioning of the VM, but while there does appear to be a way to shift the contents out of the .vmem file and into pagefile.sys, that doesn't help in this instance since both files sit on the C: drive. Is there any way to completely stop VMware from consuming additional disk space when I power on a VM?
[Edit] By the way, I'm running Workstation 9.0.1 on a Windows 7 x64 host.
