André, you're a miracle worker. I opened the package contents of the virtual disk file and found 141 snapshot files. Something went haywire somewhere, I guess. Removing them reduced the size of the virtual disk file from 70+ GB to 35.69 GB. Thanks for putting Fusion on the Slimfast Diet! 
And thanks for the little bit of a lesson in Fusion troubleshooting.
